Koeman leaves PSV for Valencia
31 October 2007

RONALD Koeman is the new manager of Valencia. After losing 3-0 away to Sevilla at the weekend, Quique Sanchez Flores was removed from the top job at the Mestalla and Oscar Fernandez installed as care-taker manager. As it turned out, Fernandez will not oversee a match in charge of the club. Koeman, still at the helm of PSV Eindhoven when the axe fell on Flores, was contacted by Valencia chairman Juan Soler on Sunday morning, just hours after Flores was shown the door. By that evening, the 44-year-old Dutchman had agreed to make the move to Spain. Koeman tendered his resignation to PSV's managing director, Jan Reker, on Tuesday; and by this afternoon the two clubs had settled on financial compensation. It was a smooth transition for each of Koeman, Valencia and PSV -- a distinct contract to the bitter, drawn-out hiring of Juande Ramos at Tottenham Hotspur just days earlier. Valencia acted quickly and decisively and got their man. In Koeman, they get a young manager with an impressive CV. He has already managed at the highest level, with Vitesse Arnhem, Ajax, Benfica, and PSV Eindhoven. And as a player, he distinguished himself with Barcelona and earned 78-caps for Holland, scoring an impressive 14-goals as a defender. It is believed that he has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Los Che, although terms of the contract have yet to be released. He will now travel to Spain and follow his new club to Mallorca for their next domestic match. His first game in charge will be next Tuesday against Rosenborg in the Champions' League.
