MARTIN Jol has resigned as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. Having agreed a severance package ahead of tonight's UEFA Cup match with Getafe at White Hart Lane, news of his departure was leaked a
t half time. The 51-year-old Dutchman, after enduring two months of criticism for his side's poor start to the season in spite of a summer spending spree, tendered his resignation prior to kick-off. Spurs lost 2-1 to the Spanish side. With the north London club a disappointing 18th-place in the league through a quarter of the season, rumors of Jol's departure had been swirling for some time. Sevilla manager Juande Ramos is widely thought to have already agreed to come to Spurs at the end of the season. In the meantime, former Real Zaragoza, Chelsea, and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet is being targeted as an interim manager and eventual assistant to Ramos. Despite the club's downturn in fortunes, the Tottenham fans stayed firmly behind Jol to the end. Even as their players were losing on the field, the faithful chanted "Stand up for Martin Jol." After replacing Jacques Santini almost exactly three years ago, Jol led Spurs to back-to-back 5th-place finishes in the Premier League. He is currently one of the leading candidates to assume the top job at Ajax.
